Advantages of
SNS in comparison to Syringe Feeding
• Easy to use -> mother has her hands
free to hold the baby;
when used a syringe an additional person is
needed to handle the syringe
• Supports milk production -> Baby’s
sucking at the breast stimulates mother’s
milk supply; this is missing when using a
syringe
• Adjustable flow rate system ->
to meet the individual needs of the baby;
when a syringe is used it is difficult to
dose the right amount of
milk and there is the possibility that the
baby chokes on the milk if it is injected
at the wrong moment
• Easy cleaning -> the SNS bottle
can be squeezed to clean the tubing,
whereas proper cleaning of the catheter tubing
used along with the syringe is much more difficult
